About

◯hiromi (maru hiromi)
「Plant」

Born in Hokkaido, Japan. I grew up reading the manga of Osamu Tezuka.
The atopic dermatitis I lived with as a student left me uneasy in a world that judges by appearance.
In a world painted black, no face can be seen
—and so I began to paint everything black.
For me, black is not a color, but shadow, absence, anonymity.
Like a starry sky, it is in the black that the unseen rises to the surface.
At the center is Black Figure. In an age where we cannot exist without filters,
these are figurative paintings that question the gaze and the inner self through black figures with their faces erased.
Their eyes are made of three circles.
In Japan, the circle (◯, maru) is a symbol of rightness
—yet is what we see truly the truth?
From this, two series branch out. hanamaru re-examines the sign of the circle.
In Japan, ◯ means "correct," but elsewhere it means wrong.
I once lived only to earn that ◯. Is the self it shaped real?
Plant paints the force of life. Fusing driftwood with metal, I raise new life from what was lost.
Surviving any environment, plants are also an image of us, living through this age.
A world where we connect through the heart, not the surface.
That is the question I keep painting.
